We Imagine

The theme this month is Imagination. Our ability to imagine is a powerful, wonderous thing! We can imagine creating a better world. Our imaginations can also "run away with us" and bring fear, anxiety, and worry. How can we use our imaginations to fully develop our inherent goodness and possibility? To create a world we long to live in? To invent new things and make good trouble? Let's explore!

Chalice Lighting to Share

In the Soft Light of this Flame

Rev. Scott Tayler

In the soft light of this flame may our lives shimmer anew.

May we notice new possibility in those relationships that seem lost.

May the turning of year give birth to a dream.

May the emerging light pull a new story into view.

May what is, give way to what might be.

May we believe again in the world we imagine.

Imagine the Colors & Location of Your Happiness

The creative folk at Soul Pancake came up with this exercise. Inspired by art therapists, they asked people to color code all the things in their lives that bring them comfort and happiness. And then with those colors in mind, the participants imaginatively located those sources of happiness on their bodies.

Here’s the video to guide you on your way: https://www.facebook.com/soulpancake/videos/10155393464706117/?v=10155393464706117

Unlike those in the video, you may not have access to a giant sheet of paper on which to trace your entire body. No worries. Just pull out whatever size paper you have and trace out a smaller figure of yourself on it. The important part is not the size of your creation, but the location on which you place your meaning-filled colors.

Just as the art therapist encourages in the video, be sure to pay attention to which color you start with, which color anchors your effort and you.

Come to your group ready to share what you learned and the journey of your colors.

Imaginatively Replace Every Other Line

Imaginatively deconstruct a poem to create something new. For this exercise, take a poem, cross out every other line, and then rewrite the poem filling in the crossed out lines with lines of your own. You can take it to the next level by taking the new poem you’ve created and crossing out the remaining original lines (leaving the ones you wrote) and then filling in the crossed out lines with new ones of your own, making it a completely original poem.

We suggest you use the poem, Delusions of Grandeur, by Darnell Arnoult. But of course you might also want to pick a poem of your own.

To help you on your way, here’s a blog post showing how one poet did the exercise using Arnoult’s poem: http://asclepion.blogspot.com/2011/02/poem-delusions-of-grandeur.html
