Death and the Arts Small Group Ministry with Rev. Karla

Email Karla (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) if interested, and she will include you in a Doodle poll to determine day and time; meetings will be twice a month on Zoom

**Content Warning** This series will examine frankly and directly death and end of life choices. Please consider the appropriateness of this event for children.

This is an open circle (drop in) small group Ministry for the Baja 4 considering death, mortality, and loss through the arts. Each session will include worship, contemplation, and sharing around a different piece of visual art, music, literature, or film. Rev. Karla will welcome you on Zoom twice a month.

We Imagine

The theme this month is Imagination. Our ability to imagine is a powerful, wonderous thing! We can imagine creating a better world. Our imaginations can also "run away with us" and bring fear, anxiety, and worry. How can we use our imaginations to fully develop our inherent goodness and possibility? To create a world we long to live in? To invent new things and make good trouble? Let's explore!

Chalice Lighting

In the Soft Light of this Flame

Rev. Scott Tayler

In the soft light of this flame may our lives shimmer anew.

May we notice new possibility in those relationships that seem lost.

May the turning of year give birth to a dream.

May the emerging light pull a new story into view.

May what is, give way to what might be.

May we believe again in the world we imagine.

Paper Fortunetellers for Imagining a New You

How to fold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHT3N-pXVTY

A pre-printed UU Version: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3UG80cRI4ZmbGtQY0dOdlgtZWc/view

For the fortunes which are unfolded inside, invite the children to think of things they might become or hope to become. They will need 8 small phrases (or just the word itself). Help them brainstorm before they begin. Here are some examples:

  • You will be an inventor.
  • You will be an engineer.
  • You will be a doctor.
  • You will be a veterinarian.
  • You will be an astronaut.
  • You will be an artist.
  • You will be a writer.
  • You will be a minister.

Create your Fortuneteller! Once done, have each child take a turn to see what comes up.

Discussion Questions

  • What fortune do you really hope to get?
  • How might you change one of these fortunes to fit yourself and imagine a new you?

Kid President’s 25 Reasons To Be Thankful!

“In My Imagination” Mindfulness Song with Lea Morris

Consider using this video to introduce mindful meditation.

Invite the children to get into a meditation position:

  • Sit comfortably in your chair or on the floor.
  • Put your hands on your lap or on your knees.
  • Sit up nice and tall.
  • Focus your eyes in front of you.
  • Find your breath moving in your body by taking in one breath through your nose and then slowly breathing it out through your mouth.

Then, play Lea’s video
