We Are a People of Stories. Our theme in worship and RE this month is Stories. We tell ourselves who we are and what we value through stories. What does your family value? Who are the heroes in your stories? How can we tell stories that encourage our children to be the heroes in their own stories?

Chalice Lighting to Share

A New Story Into Being

Rev. Dr. David Breeden

We tender this flame, opening the book,

turning to a page yet to be written.

Opening a story yet to be told.

May we fill this fresh page wisely.

May we write a new story into being.

May we together inscribe the page with hope.

Can You Solve This?

Trigger warning: this scenario contains reference to nuclear war.

Smuggling yourself aboard the rogue submarine was the easy part. Hacking into the nuclear missile launch override — a little harder. And you’ve got a problem: you don’t have the override code. You know you need the same numbers that were used to authorize the launch, but one wrong answer will lock you out. Can you figure out what numbers to enter to stop nuclear war? Alex Rosenthal shows how.

Share A Song

Many families have songs that bring comfort and connect us across distances. What songs hold that place for you? Share a family friendly song with us and we build a playlist to share with everyone! Have the Stories that Shaped America Shaped You?

Books change the world. We know this. But often the stories that shaped the world have yet to make it into our hands. Use this month to correct that. Below are numerous lists of books that have shaped the course of our country’s history. Dig through those lists to find one that you’ve not read, but also that you think you need to read. In fact, that’s where the soul work likely sits: in the process of noticing which one sticks out to you and figuring out why.

Here are the lists. Have fun exploring!

Imagine the Story Re-Written

This exercise is more meditative. It’s an invitation to spend the month wrestling with a juicy question. Here it is:

If you could erase or change one event from the world's history, which would it be and why?

Most of us will likely enjoy reflecting on it on our own, maybe journaling about it over a week or two. But what about hauling the question around with you and asking it of friends and family? It’d make a great dinner conversation with the right set of friends!

Also spend some time thinking about what the question has to teach you. It a fun exercise, but more likely than not, you will also find a challenge in it. Or maybe hope in it as well?
