Southern Arizona Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans June Event

Brunch Ritual Midsummer/Litha/Summer Solstice ***NOTE THE TIME CHANGE. This is a special brunch ritual.***

We will hold our Summer Solstice celebration on June 22nd from 9-11 a.m., led by our Heathen friends of Hearth's Gate Kindred, a tradition from Northern Europe. This heartfelt ritual will celebrate Freyr and Freya, the Lord and Lady of the season. We'll make offerings (blôt) in the fire bowl on the patio and feast together (sÿmbel) in the cool, air-conditioned Goddard Hall.

The theme of the feast is Ploughman's Lunch: artisanal bread or rolls, cheese, pickled onions, good butter, pickles, cold cuts, sliced turkey, ham, green salad, chutney, tomatoes, sausages, hard boiled eggs, and apples. Don't forget lemon bars, tea cakes, berries, or chocolates for dessert. Please bring these things with you:

• a non-alcoholic beverage for drinking and for making offerings and toasts, such as iced tea, lemonade, coffee, or seltzers.

• personal offerings, including spoken words, grain, cut flowers, etc.

• a dish to share for our brunch feast that reflects your family, ancestral, or cultural heritage. Homemade dishes and drinks are encouraged; store-bought ones are welcome. Can you bake your grandmother's bread recipe? Or is there a brand of tea your dad was loyal to? What you bring does not have to be fancy or expensive; bring it with love from your hearth to ours.

• Admission is free; donations are gratefully accepted.

• Schedule: 8:30 am for set up (optional). Gather at 9 am to socialize and prepare; we will start the ritual promptly by 9:30 am and eat at 10 am. Please help with clean up if you can.

Dr. Rick Graap (of Physicians for Social Responsibility's Tucson

Chapter) will explain the level of risk to humanity that

"two minutes until Doomsday" on the Atomic Scientists' clock

represents. But do not panic. Rick is also very knowledgeable

in what we can do to help bring those hands back away from

twelve o'clock. Rick is informed speaker who is also engaging

Fellow UUs from the Edmonds UU Congregation in Edmonds, Washington are expressing interest in coming to Tucson this summer to volunteer with the immigrants in Inn2 America, and are asking about home hospitality for a week or two, or maybe just a few days.

Open Mic

The fourth Sundayof each month after church, there is openmic entertainment in Holland.Thenext one is this Sunday, June 23, at 1:00. Musicians, poets, storytellers, magicians, dancers and entertainers of any kind welcome along with anyone who loves live entertainment. Contact Bo or Sandy Ongley for details. The UUtah Tuur

October 14 to 21, 2019

On Oct. 14 the UUtah Tuur will leave from UUCT and you can still be in the group! Only 4-8 spaces are still available depending on whether you want a double or private room. Book Club

Jul 11: Waking up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race

The next UU Book Club will meet July 11 at 9:30 am at Carolyn Cooper's home, 4050 E. la Cadena. The group is reading 'Waking up White and Finding Myself in the Story of Race' by Debbie Irving. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Personal Growth

Grief and Loss Group

For those experiencing a difficult time after the loss of a loved one, a pet, a job, or any other significant loss, UUCT now holds a Grief & Loss support group. There you can find recovery in the caring & comfort of other church members (and friends) who are also grieving a loss. Meetings are held every Sunday from 12:15-1:15 pm in the Reed Room. Childcare is available.

Summer in RE: Choose Your Own Adventure!

Remember those old books where you got to select the next thing that your character did? Or for our hip, tuned-in friends, first person video games let you control your character's every move. Now, you have that same control of your worship experience!

This summer, we are "working the bugs out" of the Choose Your Own Adventure Model and will roll out a full program in Fall 2019. In short, on Sunday when you arrive at church, children, youth, and adults will have the option to sign up for one of three experiences:

1. Youth Focus (Emerson; 12 – 19 years old, sorry adults, only advisors are allowed): designed for older youth who are ready to really dig deep into the themes and ideas. Discussion, service, leadership, art, and a good amount of laughter await our oldest youth.

2. Art and Spirit (Blackwell; all ages): in this space we'll tell another story that explores our theme for the day, offering additional avenues for deepening understanding. Following the story, we will wonder about the lessons we learn from our stories and engage in self-directed art-making in response to the themes, lessons, or feelings that emerge.

3. Movement and Games (Awareness; all ages): Ready to move your body? This is the place! We will live Unitarian Universalist values through games, movement, dance, and other forms of physical self-expression. Each week the activities will be different, but we'll work on understanding what we can learn about our spirits from moving our bodies.

Of course, the 4^th option is Worship. Remaining in the sanctuary for the Worship Service is an option for all children and youth. Staying in Worship with their family is a good option topic really speaks to them or they need a quiet space away from other young people.

Digital Game Day

June 29 | 1-5pm | Goddard Hall

Calling all (video) Gamers, Gamer Wannabes, and those who just like having fun! At Digital Game day, we will be setting up computer stations so we can play digital games (not internet games) for friendly competitions and socializing! We'll have a Wii for physical games, spaces for board games, and even some light snacks. Have your own hand-held device (like a Nintendo Switch)? Bring it and hang out with us!

Very Inquisitive People (VIP) Lounge

At UUCT, we welcome children of all ages as integral to the life of the congregation and to worship. The vision is to create a soft space in the sanctuary that has a place for babies and toddlers to chill, preschoolers to keep hands busy and people of all ages to sit on the floor or bean bag chair.

Help us build the VIP Lounge by donating new or used items in good condition:

• Short bookshelves –1-2 shelves high

• A rug 5' x 6' in muted colors

• Baskets –plastic, cloth, or wicker without handles

• floor pillows in muted colors and soft fabrics

• Quiet games such as etch-a-sketches and finger labyrinths

Summer Activity Leader

The best part of the Choose Your Own Adventure format is that ANYONE (yes, you!) can step into the classroom for a short time commitment (or a longer one if you're so moved).

Jamili will be preparing all the curriculum and supplies, and inexperienced teachers will be paired with experienced folks! You'll have the day's activities in advance so you can be prepared, but there won't be any search for materials or books! Woohoo!
