Desert Chorale

Desert Choral

Desert Chorale is a group of some 35 people who enjoy singing and making music together. They meet each Wednesday during weekly rehearsals from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. On two or three Sundays a month the choir sings in the service. Desert Chorale rehearses and sings from the middle of August to the beginning of June each year.

The choir’s repertoire varies widely from month-to-month. For example, between August 2008 and January 2009, the choir has sung Nigerian folk songs, Mozart and Brahms, a jazz standard, traditional Christmas and Channakuh carols a Caribbean folk song, a gospel arrangement, and more. Largely, the style of music and the content of the songs fit the services in which we sing. Oftentimes, Diane Dowgiert, who sings in the choir, intertwines the choir’s music with her sermons.

The ranks of Desert Chorale include people with no musical experience and an inability to read music, as well as people who have worked as professional musicians. They are welcoming and harmonious.

If you enjoy singing and being with congenial people, we invite you to join Desert Chorale.

Family Singers

Family Chorus

Children, young people, and their parents are invited to join this choral group whose goal is to unify and strengthen the bonds of families through music. A nursery for the very young is available during rehearsals. We meet from 8:45 to 9:40 every Sunday morning in the Awareness Building and our rehearsals coincide with the Tucson Unified School District’s schedule. So this means that we break for the summer months.

We sing a variety of songs ranging from classical to spirituals, very easy to somewhat difficult, and perform in the Sunday morning worship once a month or so. We also participate in the All Music Sunday service each year. From small beginnings 20 years ago, we now have nearly 40 members. Some of our singers have been in the choir since they were only 3 or 4 years old! Each Sunday we take time to share experiences and happenings during the previous week, and we celebrate birthdays with a special birthday song. We also enjoy an occasional pot-luck together.

We like to feature those children who are studying privately on the piano or musical instrument and have them perform for us during a break in our rehearsals. Children and young people are the future so we feel they are very important.

On a Sunday in December, it has become traditional to join with the Religious Education Department in presenting a musical pageant. In the past, we have performed both of Joyce Poley’s Christmas Musical services and this year we will be doing a different musical.

It’s always a delight to welcome new singers and become acquainted with families so if you have questions or would like to join, please feel welcome to contact me via phone (520-326-8259) or e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
