June 1, 2010 Awareness Room 7:00 PM

Members Present:  Ross Behm, Richard Brodesky, Judy Dare, Mickey Dowling, Michael Gray, Jeanna Jones

 Administrative Liaison:  Mary Wiese

 Introduction:

The May minutes were approved as corrected.

Judy Dare was introduced and welcomed to the Committee.  Ed Savard’s resignation was announced.

Richard stressed the need for excellent communication and asked all committee members to discuss ideas among themselves as well as with other members of the congregation.  He said that he called upon committee members for advice when faced with decisions and asked people to be available as best they can.

Richard also brought up strategies for dealing with upset or angry members of the congregation.  Committee members are asked to refer such people to Richard and/or to invite these people to the next Committee meeting.  We will give them the first part of the agenda so that they do not have sacrifice an entire evening.  Committee members agreed and felt these were good ideas.

Old Business: The Committee reviewed all the topics on the agenda.  Jeanna was complimented and commended for watering the Memorial Garden and for taking the initiative of cleaning it.

New Business:

1. Rainwater Harvesting: We decided that doing this was not feasible at this time.

 2. Green Sanctuary: We have moved forward in our use of compact fluorescent bulbs.  We need to see if there is a greener option for the bulbs in the globe lights in the Sanctuary.

 3. Annual Back Flow Test: Mary reported that we need to schedule an annual back flow test for the irrigation system.  We barely passed the recent one (May 2010), so we will need to look at the system in the future.

 4. Goddard Hall:

 A. Registers: Mickey and Ross will be checking out the registers, particularly the one on the north.  Adding a diverter and/or adjusting the vents may help diffuse the air better.  If not, an inexpensive replacement register will be sought.

B. Solar Film on Patio Doors: We will table this item pending redecorating Goddard.

C. Savings on Summer Electric Bills: Mary provided electric bills for the summers of 2008 and 2009.  There was a decrease of approximately $1145, which the Committee found significant.  So we recommend closing Goddard Hall on Sundays during the summer.

D. Painting: We will delay all redecorating until our meeting with the acoustics consultant. See Below.

3. Acoustics Consultant: Brian Moon will investigate and nominate an acoustics consultant and get back to the Committee.  The consultant will examine the Sanctuary and help develop a multi-year plan to improve Goddard Hall.

4. Moratorium on Projects in the Sanctuary: Because Byron Skinner who is leading this project will be undergoing two knee surgeries in succession, we will not be dealing with the Sanctuary until Byron has recovered.

We will move forward on hiring the acoustics consultant because we hope that person’s work will make the space more flexible and easily used for our music ministry.  The consultancy will also give us new possibilities and new directions for everything else.

Richard will meet with Diane and Brian to review the Sanctuary project and return with information to the Committee

Special Requests:

1.  New handle and lock for office door: approved—Jesus will deal with the replacement.

2. Tools: We will ask members of the congregation to donate spare or used tools in order to develop a UUCT tool crib to be housed indoors and under lock and key.

3. Electric Signs: Mary will have the electrician who is helping with fire code compliance finish the needed exit signs and look at the 22nd St. sign.

4. Memorial for Barbara Tegetof: The committee approved the idea of a concrete bench with a plaque for the Memorial Garden.  We will solicit donations from the congregation.  Ross will price the bench.

5. Names on the church charge account at Ace Hardware: Mary will put the following names on the account:  Mickey, Ross, Byron, Jesus, and Tom Warburton

6. Workshop on Container Succulents and Cacti: Judy will organize and lead a workshop on planting succulents and cacti in containers on June 26, from 7 – 10 AM, to beautify the church campus.  We will provide refreshments.

7. Collaboration with Membership and Community Life: We will be soliciting names for people to participate in a holiday decorations workshop to commence the winter holiday season and a Three Kings Day party to remove the decorations at the conclusion of the cycle.

Additionally, we will be looking at other workshops for members of the congregation on related topics. These workshops should be enjoyable and helpful as well as provide opportunities for community building.

Next Meeting:  Tuesday, July 6, 2010, Awareness Room, 7:00 PM
