Special Meeting
Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at 11:30 AM

Present: Richard Brodesky, Diane Dowgiert, Mickey Dowling, Brian Moon, and Mary Wiese

Purpose: This meeting was called to enhance communication between the Buildings and Grounds Committee and the professional staff.  We believe that the people doing a job know its needs best and that we need to communicate directly.

Sanctuary:

1. Pulpit: The pulpit needs to be lighter and perhaps able to sit on a platform giving more flexibility in location and height.  Diane said she needs:

  • Space at the top for an open 3-ring binder
  • Shelf space
  • Good lighting.

A platform and an appropriate lectern would be acceptable.

2. Glass Globes over Lower Stage: We might remove them altogether because of the needs for people to stand, stand on riser, the needs of outside groups who rent the facility.  It is most likely that we will shorten the stems and raise them ourselves.

3. Cooler Bulbs: Mary will consult with the electrician and look for more ecological bulbs for all the globes.

4. High Stage: The choir will NOT sing on the high stage.  Perhaps in the future this stage can be lowered to be even with the east stage.

5. Risers: The risers are excellent and can be broken down and moved very easily.  They were also donated in memory of Lyle Paulsen.

6. Rear Projection: Possibly.  But we are not in a position to get all that equipment.

7. Screen: The screen will definitely be moved in front of the brick ovoid space to the left (west) of the high stage.

8. Choir: The choir will move more to the center or sometimes to the lower stage.  A new riser filler triangle may have to be built.

9. Organ/Control Board: Brian will consult Agnes and Donna to see if the organ can be moved or sold as neither of them enjoys playing it and there are not many requests for it use.  It is a hard instrument to play and with a small expenditure, electronic instruments can be used more satisfactorily in its place.  A control panel for the sound and projection systems can be built in this area.  Brian will check back with us in early July.

10. FM Loop for Alcove: Chas McBride is looking into this.  Richard will ask him for an update.

Goddard Hall

1. Overview: Brian gave Goddard an overview and explained that the room has excellent acoustics for voice but not for music.  So musical performances will occur in the Sanctuary.

2. Acoustic Tile: We should replace the acoustic tile with something more technically up-to-date.

2. Freshening Up:

  • Painting
  • Hanging banners from ceiling
  • Replacing Bulletin Boards
  • Attractive wall hangings
  • Electric fire for Fireplace Room
  • Better storage of objects in rear of hall
  • Replace patio doors with double pane glass doors that open outward
  • Keep existing floor
  • New arrangement for information tables, especially after patio heaters arrive
  • Check with Mary for additional ideas about the needs of groups renting this space.
