Building and Grounds Minutes: July 6, 2010
Awareness Room                                    7:00 PM

Members attending: Mickey Dowling, Jeanna Jones, Charles McBride, Kay Carlson, Bob Samuels, Ross Behm, Richard Brodesky

1.0         General Matters

1.1         After introductions and the chalice lighting, Richard led a discussion of the recent memo from the ET concerning the role of the Committee.  We are the first point of contact for any projects.  We are also not gatekeepers; we are interested in success, coordination, and excellent communication.

1.2         The Minutes were approved.

2.0         Old Business

2.1         Judy Dare reported on the cacti and succulent workshop.  Six people attended, and a as result of a positive experience Julia Mehrer donated pots to the church.  The patio will be a work in progress.  Judy and her group will utilize the potted plants that have been temporarily moved behind the patio wall.  Watering is being done, but there are some issues attendant to watering all the gardens.

2.2         Mickey reported on the meeting with Diane and Brian.  Everyone is finally on the same page.  He talked about the need for a new pulpit and other possible changes.  We are waiting for Byron to return from his knee surgeries but the four globes above the lower stage can be changed and the screen can be moved.  The committee approved doing this.  Committee members were requested to study the materials, especially the ones relating to moving the organ to build a control booth.  We discussed the possible impact on hearing-impaired people who enjoy sitting in the Alcove.  Chas will be looking into the installation of an FM Loop system.

Goddard Hall will require some beautification (banners, color, a new bulletin board, etc.).  Ross said acoustics will be improved if the acoustic tiles are replaced with the material used for home music studios.  We will constitute a sub-committee to deal with Goddard.

2.3         We are selling the former minister’s desk housed in the northeast corner of Goddard.  We are making it available to church members and friends, but we will sell it outside of the church if no one wants it.

2.4         We selected a bench for the Barbara Tegetoff Memorial.  We are accepting contributions through Labor Day.  We need to be able to front the money before we can order the bench.  Here is a picture of the bench selected, and it will be in this color:  GR30.

2.5         We will be scheduling a work day in October to clean out our storeroom and the pod behind the church.

2.6         We will look into the signage and the electrical problems with the 22nd St. sign.

3.0         New Business

3. 1          Memorial Garden

The Memorial Garden needs work.  Jeanna has been watering and cleaning up, but we need to support her and to supplement her efforts.

The Committee has chosen to plant two or three Texas olive (a misnomer—they are not true olive trees) to shade the garden.

3.2         Dead trees will need to be removed.  Richard will look into possible ways of doing this.

3.3         Peace Garden

We are recommending that the area with the round shape north of the Patio be called the Peace Garden and that it be better maintained.  We shall ask the ET to have all church departments use the space for one activity during the church year.

3.4         Bell:  We are exploring options for the missing bell in the tower.  We may look at a ceramic bell.

3.5         Mike Greenbaum asked the Committee to arrange to have his explanation about the world religions plaque in the lobby printed in an attractive way, framed, and displayed.  The Committee will take care of this.
